Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) at Ubuntu Junior Academy

Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) at Ubuntu Junior Academy

At Ubuntu Junior Academy, we are dedicated to providing a high-quality education rooted in the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), which was introduced in Kenya in December 2017. This innovative system focuses on monitoring each learner’s progress over a 2-6-3-3-3 year period, evenly divided into three major levels of education:

  1. Early Years Education
  2. Middle School Education
  3. Senior School, Tertiary, and University Education

Our commitment to this curriculum allows us to offer integrated learning approaches that give Ubuntu Junior Academy children the best possible educational experience as they embark on their journey toward reaching their full potential.

We Offer:

  • Pre-Primary Education
  • Lower Primary Education
  • Upper Primary Education

CBC Education System Structure

The CBC system is structured into a 2-6-3-3-3 education cycle, with each learner transitioning through a minimum of 17 levels, each lasting one year. These levels are grouped into four general categories:

  1. Early Year Education (EYE): This includes Pre-Primary and Lower Primary education.
  2. Middle School: Encompasses Upper Primary and Lower Secondary education.
  3. Senior School: Focuses on Upper Secondary education.
  4. Tertiary Education: Includes Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) or University education.

Key Terms in CBC:

  • Learning Areas: What used to be called subjects are now known as Learning Areas.
  • Topics: Topics have been rebranded as Strands.
  • Sub-topics: Sub-topics are now referred to as Sub-Strands.

Early Year Education (EYE)

This level imparts mastery of basic skills upon learners and consists of two sub-categories:

  1. Pre-Primary: This initial entry level spans two years, with learners entering the education system at a minimum age of 4 years old. It includes Pre-Primary 1 (PP1) and Pre-Primary 2 (PP2), which corresponds to what was previously known as Nursery. Prior to this entry level, Day-Care is also available and takes one year but is not a requirement.
  2. Lower Primary: After Pre-Primary, learners progress to the Grade level, which includes Grade 1, Grade 2, and Grade 3. Progression to the next level is determined through a combination of assessments and class-based evaluations.

Middle School

Learners at this level are considered to be in Middle School, which includes Upper Primary and Lower Secondary education.

  1. Upper Primary: This consists of Grade 4, Grade 5, and Grade 6. At the end of Grade 6, learners sit for an assessment to determine their readiness for the Lower Secondary Level.
